Anselm Keifer, painter and sculptor, and Wim Wenders, filmmaker, were both born in Germany in 1945—the former during the war, the latter after it. Keifer’s art is informed by German history; Wender’s is very much in the present. Each is a major artist, and Wenders’ 3D film, in exploring the awesome spatial dimension of Keifer’s monumental works, lends them a literal and wondrous depth. At its Cannes premiere, Variety described the film as “a study of a man’s soul.”
